Magicians have relatively high pet damage, but a melee character with a strike augment can do more. In order for a Magician to do anywhere near good DPS, he needs to complete the Mana Necklace quest. This allows a caster to change hit points for mana and adds a sympathetic proc to the pet equivalent to an ice strike aug. They are most well known for their ability to summon the group to them, but this ability is redundant with Call of the Companions (Reward Item).
